I’m thrilled to start my Fulbright Scholar program in Japan for the 2024-2025 academic year! This opportunity is not only a professional milestone but also a personal dream come true.
The program started with a helpful orientation in Tokyo, where I met fellow Fulbright scholars and alumni. This fall, I’ll be teaching Culinary Diplomacy and American Food Literature at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, and in the spring, University of Ryukyus in Okinawa.
I’d like to extend my gratitude to Yuki Yasumura at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology for her support, and to the Fulbright Japan team for this life-changing opportunity to bridge the gap between the U.S. and Japan through education and culture!
The Welcome Reception for 2024 Fulbright American Grantees was at the Meiji Kinenkan in Tokyo. At the reception on September 10, 2024, remarks were given by The Honorable Yasue Nobuo, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the U.S. Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission Katherine Monahan. The toast was given by Mr. Glenn S. Fukushima (1982 Graduate Research Fellow Program). It was a wonderful opportunity to make new connections and deepen ties to the Fulbright Japan Community.
During the two-day orientation in Tokyo, we had meetings about safety, residency, education, and culture. We also enjoyed delicious Japanese traditional food, such as this beautifully presented bento box.
I’m excited and grateful for this year ahead! Living and teaching in Japan as a Fulbright Lecturer will be professionally and personally deeply rewarding and fulfilling.
